Lockout Tags & 'Do Not Operate' Labels

A lockout procedure is only complete when clear warning tags hang on the locked-out switches. A tag identifies who is working on the installation, since when, and above all: that the device must not be operated. Without a tag, a lockout is only half done.

The role of the tag in the LOTO procedure

Under Dutch and international safety standards (NEN 3140, OSHA 1910.147), a warning tag is a mandatory part of every lockout procedure. The tag must:

  • Be visible — striking colour (red or yellow), clearly legible
  • Be identifiable — name of the technician, date, and department if applicable
  • Be weather-resistant — frost, rain, heat, oil and chemicals must not affect legibility
  • Not be easy to remove — only by the technician who applied it
