LOTO Lockbox — Group Lockout for Lockout Tagout

A lockbox is a special safety box used in group lockout: several technicians work on the same installation at the same time, but there is only one shared switch. The key of the lockout lock on that switch goes into the lockbox, and only when every technician has removed their personal lock from the lockbox can the installation be put back into operation.

When do you use a lockbox?

  • During major maintenance shutdowns where dozens of technicians work on one machine
  • During shift handovers where the work is not completed within a single shift
  • When a key must be placed under controlled custody rather than staying with one person

How does it work in practice?

  1. The installation is locked with a master lock
  2. The key of that master lock goes into the lockbox, which is then locked
  3. Every technician places their own LOTO padlock on the lockbox
  4. Only when everyone has removed their lock can the master key be taken out of the box
  5. Only then can the installation be put back into operation

This complies with the LOTOTO procedure (Lock Out, Tag Out, Try Out) as prescribed by NEN 3140 and international OSHA guidelines.
