Electrical Lockout: Safe Work on Installations

Electrical lockout is the procedure to make electrical installations completely de-energised and locked during maintenance, repair or inspection. The goal is simple: prevent an installation from unexpectedly being re-energised while work is being carried out. In the Netherlands this is mandatory under Dutch safety law and the NEN 3140 standard for working on low-voltage installations.

When do you apply electrical lockout?

Every time a technician, electrician or maintenance employee carries out work on an installation that may release energy — think of switchgear, motors, frequency drives, solar panels or industrial machinery. Lockout tagout (LOTO) ensures that the main switch or circuit breaker is physically locked and no one can accidentally restore power.
